Understanding the ETIAS for Georgians

As Georgia continues to strengthen its ties with the European Union, a new travel update is approaching that will affect all citizens planning visits to the Schengen Area. Starting in late 2026, the European Union will launch the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS).

It is vital to understand that this change does not mean the end of visa-free travel for Georgians; rather, it is a digital security layer designed to streamline border management and enhance safety within European borders.

What is ETIAS for Georgians and Why is it Being Introduced?

ETIAS is a completely automated electronic system that identifies security, irregular migration, or high epidemic risks posed by visa-exempt visitors. Currently, Georgian citizens can travel to the Schengen Area using only a biometric passport.

Under the new rules, while you still won’t need a traditional, complex visa, you will be required to obtain this digital authorization before you board your flight or arrive at a land border. The system cross-checks applicant data against various EU security databases to ensure a smoother experience for the vast majority of legitimate travelers.

The Application Process and Costs

Applying for an ETIAS is designed to be a simple, hassle-free task that can be completed from home. The application will be available via an official website and a dedicated mobile application. To apply, you will need your valid biometric passport, an email address, and a credit or debit card. The process involves filling out a form with basic personal information, travel document details, and answers to a few security-related questions.

The cost for the application is 7 EUR. To support families and senior citizens, the European Union has made the authorization free of charge for anyone under the age of 18 or over the age of 70. Once you submit your form and pay the fee, the system typically processes the request within minutes. In rare cases where further checks are needed, the approval might take up to four days, so it is always a good idea to apply at least one week before your scheduled departure.

Validity, Rules, and Entry Requirements

One of the best features of the ETIAS is its longevity. Once granted, the authorization is valid for three years, or until your passport expires—whichever happens first. During these three years, you can enter the Schengen Area multiple times for short-term stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This flexibility is perfect for those traveling for tourism, visiting relatives, attending business meetings, or seeking short-term medical treatment.

Because the authorization is digitally linked to your biometric passport, you don’t need to worry about carrying extra paperwork. When you reach the border, the official will see your ETIAS status as soon as they scan your passport. However, remember that if you replace your passport for any reason, you must apply for a new ETIAS, as it cannot be transferred to a new document.

Furthermore, while the ETIAS is a mandatory requirement, the final decision on entry always remains with the border authorities, who may still verify your purpose of stay and financial means.
