USA Consulate - Photo Requirements

Updated: 21 hours ago

When completing the DS-160 online nonimmigrant visa application, you are required to upload a digital photograph that meets specific criteria. It's recommended to use a professional visa photo service to ensure compliance with these requirements.

Key Requirements:

  • Color and Background: The photo must be in color, taken against a plain white or off-white background.

  • Size and Composition: The image should be square, with dimensions of 600x600 pixels. The head must measure between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (22 mm and 35 mm), constituting 50% to 69% of the image's total height from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.

  • Recency and Pose: Taken within the last six months, the photo should reflect your current appearance. You must face the camera directly with a neutral facial expression and both eyes open.

  • Attire: Wear clothing that you normally wear daily. Uniforms are not acceptable, except for religious attire worn consistently. Avoid hats or head coverings unless for religious purposes; ensure the full face is visible without shadows.

  • Eyewear and Accessories: Eyeglasses are prohibited in visa photos unless medically necessary, accompanied by a signed statement from a medical professional. If permitted, ensure no glare or shadows obscure the eyes, and frames do not cover any part of the eyes. Headphones, wireless hands-free devices, or similar items are not acceptable.

Adhering to these specifications is crucial, as non-compliant photos can lead to delays in your visa application process.

Please note that some U.S. embassies or consulates may require you to bring physical passport-sized photos to your interview, in addition to the digital upload. It's essential to review the specific instructions provided by the embassy or consulate where you plan to apply.

The U.S. visa photo must be a high-quality, original image that meets the official requirements.

The following types of photos are NOT acceptable:

Copied or scanned photos from driver’s licenses or other official documents

Snapshots or casual photos

Magazine or printed photos

Low-quality photos from vending machines or mobile phones

Full-length photographs (only passport-style headshots are allowed)
